The world famous Appleby Fair is a gypsy gathering that takes place annually in June, at the nearby town of Appleby-in-Westmorland. Dating back hundreds of years, it is still an authentic part of life for the traveller community and not a tourist attraction per se, but is one of a kind!

Spectacular waterfall above nearby Ullswater. Plenty of footpaths pass near it, and the falls itself are incredibly beautiful. You may even see red squirrels.
Castlerigg Stone Circle - 24m; 40mins drive
Well-preserved neolithic site in a spectacular location above Keswick. Hugely atmospheric and photogenic.
The Lakes Distillery - 34m; 50 mins
Perhaps less of an adventure, but one for the adults! The Lakes Distillery, known for its gin and vodka, is now making English single malt whisky. Gift shop, fantastic restaurant and distillery tours on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake.
Hadrian's Wall
Iconic and famous Roman Wall, built to separate England and Scotland thousands of years ago. It no longer represents the border, but the whole length can be walked, and some sections are remarkably well preserved. An important part of British history.
