Cycling

We’re near the Lakes, so as you’d expect there are many hills! Some people say that makes cycling very hard, others say it makes it wonderful. It’s up to you to decide what you’re looking for. The one thing that’s for sure is that it is very pretty when you get out there!

You can either bring your own bikes, or you can hire them from our cycling partners Arragon Cycle Hire in Penrith – they will even deliver them right here to Gill Bank for you!

Hartside Circular

  • Length: 20 miles / 2 hrs – Hard
  • Start point – Gill Bank
  • What we think – The Hartside Pass is a classic. This starts with a three mile warm up before the long slog out of Melmerby up to the top of Hartside pass. This circular route then takes you along the country lanes through the local villages.

Great Dunn Fell Hill Climb – a classic on our Doorstep!

  • Length: 8 miles – Very Hard
  • Start point – Gill Bank
  • What we think – WE haven’t tried it as we think it is mad, but we’re sure there is someone out there who will! The monster climb itself is just over 4.2 miles long … But it does have an average incline of 9% (max incline 20%). Just to get you started we’ve given you a short 8 mile route from Gill Bank to the start and then a little round trip back to Gill Bank. Road surface is great.

Ousby, Melmerby, Gamblesby, Hunsonby

  • Length: 10 miles – Easy
  • Start point – Gill Bank
  • What we think – This is a nice family friendly day out on the bikes.  It takes you through the old viking villages of Melmerby and Gamblesby. You’ve also got the choice of stopping for coffee or a bite to eat in the Old Melmerby Bakery and even, if you pack your swimmies, you could stop off at the Hunsonby Lido for a swim in the outdoor pool.
